Our grandparents usually gave us the best advice, including “put your best foot forward”, “you only get a chance to make a good first impression once” and “you get more flies with honey”. And this age old wisdom continues to this day, especially in the age of social media. So when you are looking for a new job, perhaps its time to consider getting a new business portrait for your Linked-In profile!

Here are some tips I give my portrait clients: keep clothing simple, bring fresh ironed clothes to change into before the shoot, and professional hair and make-up is always a good thing for the ladies.

As a professional portrait photographer, I swear by my tried and true equipment: a ladder so I can be taller than my subject to slim down the face, a long lens to blur the background and my Adobe Lightroom software which allows me to make cosmetic adjustments before delivering the shoot to the client.

Its great for us all to have updated professional portraits for linked-in, and when the holidays roll around, to document your corporate christmas or holiday party with fun photos for all. Party and special event photos can be uploaded to a website for everyone to view and enjoy.

More and more, clients are having me shoot headshots for Linked-In and social media. While a flattering and updated corporate portrait is so important for everyone, its even more so for social media sites.

At a recent webinar on Linked-In, I learned how easy it is to find new professional contacts. Linked-In has filtering tools to refine your searches, and you can easily find friends of friends who can help you with your job search, mentoring opportunities or peer networking.

But as the old saying goes, you can never make a second first impression. Which is why its so important to have a NYC professional photographer take updated photos of your professional staff so everyone has a flattering professional headshot portrait.

As NY City real estate continues to expand and grow into the sky, one thing I always enjoy thinking about is that behind every window in every building old or new… there are people living or working. There must be many millions of windows in NYC buildings, maybe even a billion! And the millions of people behind these windows have their own unique view of our wonderful city.

So when I am on assignment as a professional photographer, whether it be as a portrait photographer or as a meeting or event photographer, I always enjoying seeing the location’s view of the New York City skyline, and trying to incorporate these views into the photos.

This business portrait was taken high atop Hearst’s beautiful and amazing building on West 57th Street. The views northward of Central Park served as a perfect background for this magazine assignment. While it was a bit tricky to light the room and not get reflections on the glass, it served as a perfect setting for this executive’s photo, and I was very grateful for his hospitality and kindness throughout the shoot.

A portrait speaks a thousand words, so make a good first impression by posting a flattering professional headshot on your LinkedIn profile. Professional portrait photographers will photograph you from different angles, interact with you to make you feel comfortable and relaxed, and then offer a variety of shots to choose from. I always recommend wearing a dark jacket, that women wear light make-up, mascara and consider having their hair professionally done before the shoot.
